Create defensible space for 100’ around your home: 

If you  have concerns about open space and possible fire hazards within your home’s 100’ ring of defensible space:

Visit the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority resources page to learn more about a defensible space property assessment and matching grants available for homeowners and businesses.

If the open space belongs to the City of Novato and you have concerns about fire hazards, please contact the City Public Works Department  by filling out a Service Request at novato.org/servicerequest, or email Public Works at pw@novato.org.

You can also contact the Marin County Assessor at (415) 473-7215 or via email to get help determining ownership of adjacent open spaces.

The City of Novato works collaboratively with the Novato Fire District, the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority, the Marin County Open Space District, and FIRESafe Marin,  local HOAs and private property owners to address critical areas requiring vegetation management. The City Council received a presentation on this issue at the June 28, 2022 City Council Meeting.
