Application Screening

Application screening is a procedure used to qualify individuals for the next phase of the recruitment process. During this process, requirements such as experience, training, or education of each applicant are reviewed. Make sure to include the required documents with your application packet and clearly state your qualifying background on your application form. Ensure that your application is complete. 

Written Examination

A written examination is sometimes used to test specific, technical knowledge related to a certain job. The test may consist of any combination of multiple choice, true/false, completion or identification items or it might be experiential. Since many of these written examinations are job-specific, a careful review of the job announcement will provide you with an overview of the technical knowledge needed for the job.

Oral Board Procedures

The City of Novato uses subject matter experts as raters on its panels during its personnel interview process.

Every person who submits an application to the City should not automatically expect to be scheduled for a personal interview with a rating panel. Interview slots for this purpose will be determined by the number of top-rated competitors. Only the best qualified persons will be invited to participate in the personnel interviews, which we call oral boards.

Typically ten to twelve persons are invited to compete for an opening. With multiple openings, this number increases to accommodate the maximum number of persons who can fit into a day's interview schedule. The use of one day to interview is a standard.
